Fun facts about the Conquistadores helmet trophy:

The First to
Wear It

George Knudson, who won the Tucson Open in 1968, was the first professional golfer to ever win and wear the unique trophy.

The Trophy's Design

Modeled after the famed Spanish helmets of the 16th century, the distinctive trophy was originally produced in Toledo, Spain, and was made from steel.

Helmet for HOFers

A number of players who are in the World Golf Hall of Fame took home the helmet, including Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson and many others.

'Lefty'
Left a Mark

Phil Mickelson, the victor in 1991’s Tucson Open, unfortunately cut his head on a screw inside the helmet while attempting to put it on.

Better Late Than Never

When Arnold Palmer won in 1967, all he received was a piggy bank trophy and a check. In 2005, the Conquistadores corrected that omission by gifting him the helmet

Women
Winners

The Tucson Conquistadores hosted an LPGA event in town between 1983-87, and winners of that tournament – including Jan Stephenson, Chris Johnson & Betsy King – received the helmet trophy.

Forged From Steel

The iconic helmet that is given to the winner each year is made from high-quality steel, which is then chrome plated, and weighs 3 lbs, 6 ounces.

Tennis
Anyone?

In 1972, legendary tennis champion Billie Jean King played in the Virginia Slims Grand Prix Tournament in Tucson and tried on the helmet trophy for a photo-op.

Match Play Memories

Even though they had their own cool trophy – the blue Waterford Wedgewood Trophy – the iconic helmet was still handed out as well from 2007-2014 at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships.
